Age- and quality-dependent DNA methylation correlate with melanin-based coloration in a wild bird ArchiMer
Soulsbury, Carl D.; Lipponen, Anssi; Wood, Kristie; Mein, Charles A.; Hoffman, Joseph I.; Lebigre, Christophe.
Secondary sexual trait expression can be influenced by fixed individual factors (such as genetic quality) as well as by dynamic factors (such as age and environmentally induced gene expression) that may be associated with variation in condition or quality. In particular, melanin-based traits are known to relate to condition and there is a well-characterized genetic pathway underpinning their expression. However, the mechanisms linking variable trait expression to genetic quality remain unclear. One plausible mechanism is that genetic quality could influence trait expression via differential methylation and differential gene expression. We therefore conducted a pilot study examining DNA methylation at a candidate gene (agouti-related neuropeptide: AgRP) in...

Age, condition and dominance-related sexual ornament size before and during the breeding season in the black grouse Lyrurus tetrix ArchiMer
Harris, Sarah; Kervinen, Matti; Lebigre, Christophe; Pike, Thomas W.; Soulsbury, Carl D..
Male ornaments function as honest cues of male quality in many species and are subject to intra‐ and intersexual selection. These ornaments are generally studied during peak expression, however their size outside the breeding season may determine ultimate ornament size and costliness, and as such reproductive success. We investigated whether male black grouse Lyrurus tetrix eye comb size was related to age, condition and measures of male dominance before and during the breeding season. Total combined eye comb size began to increase ~70 days before the start of the breeding season. Adult males (aged ≥ 2 years old) had consistently larger eye combs than younger males (1 year old) both before and during the breeding season. Heavier and more dominant adult...

Effects of dispersant treated oil upon exploratory behaviour in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Aimon, Cassandre; Lebigre, Christophe; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Floch, Stephane; Claireaux, Guy.
Accidental spills are pervasive pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Resorting to chemical dispersant is one of the most implemented strategies in response to oil spills, but it results in an increase in the bio-availability of oil compounds known to disturb fish neurosensory capacities and hence fish habitat use. While it has become well established that acute oil exposure can cause a range of physiological defects, sub-lethal consequences on animal behaviour have only received recent attention. Here we investigated the effect of an exposure to a 62 h- dispersant treated oil on the exploration tendency (exploratory activity, and avoidance of unfamiliar open areas) of juvenile European sea bass. Three different concentrations of chemically dispersed oil were...

Evolution spatio-temporelle de la condition, de la structure en taille et en âge de la sardine Atlantique ArchiMer
Veron, Matthieu; Lebigre, Christophe; Bertignac, Michel; Doray, Mathieu; Duhamel, Erwan; Huret, Martin; Pawlowski, Lionel.

Rapport Final – Projet CAPTAIN. Connaissances Améliorées à l'aide des Pêcheurs sur la sArdIne et l'ANchois de la façade Atlantque - Bilan 2015-2018 ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Duhamel, Erwan; Gatti, Paul; Lebigre, Christophe; Le Mestre, Sophie; Petitgas, Pierre; Rabiller, Manuella; Guigue, Thierry; Joguet, Manon; Maillet, Jérome.

Sex, size and timing: Sampling design for reliable population genetics analyses using microsatellite data ArchiMer
Dubois, Quentin; Lebigre, Christophe; Schtickzelle, Nicolas; Turlure, Camille.
Population genetics is used in a wide variety of fields such as ecology and biodiversity conservation. How estimated genetic characteristics of natural populations can be influenced by the sampling design has been a long-standing concern. Multiple simulation and empirical studies illustrated the influence of both sample size and polymorphism of markers. However, our review of studies on butterfly population genetics indicates no consensus on sample size for the estimation of genetic diversity or differentiation. Furthermore, other aspects of sampling design (sex ratio and timing of sampling) were not addressed and their potential impact on genetic parameter estimates rarely explored. Using a large empirical dataset (with spatial and temporal replicates)...

Simultaneous age-dependent and age-independent sexual selection in the lekking black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) ArchiMer
Kervinen, Matti; Lebigre, Christophe; Soulsbury, Carl D..
Individuals' reproductive success is often strongly associated with their age, with typical patterns of early-life reproductive improvement and late-life senescence. These age-related patterns are due to the inherent trade-offs between life-history traits competing for a limited amount of resources available to the organisms. In males, such trade-offs are exacerbated by the resource requirements associated with the expression of costly sexual traits, leading to dynamic changes in trait expression throughout their life span. Due to the age dependency of male phenotypes, the relationship between the expression of male traits and mating success can also vary with male age. Hence, using longitudinal data in a lekking species with strong sexual selection - the...

Stabilising selection on immune response in male black grouse Lyrurus tetrix ArchiMer
Soulsbury, Carl D.; Siitari, Heli; Lebigre, Christophe.
Illnesses caused by a variety of micro- and macro- organisms can negatively affect individuals' fitness, leading to the expectation that immunity is under positive selection. However, immune responses are costly and individuals must trade-off their immune response with other fitness components (e.g. survival or reproductive success) meaning that individuals with intermediate response may have the greatest overall fitness. Such a process might be particularly acute in species with strong sexual selection because the condition-dependence of male secondary sexual-traits might lead to striking phenotypic differences amongst males of different immune response levels. We tested whether there is selection on immune response by survival and reproduction in...

Viability selection creates negative heterozygosity-fitness correlations in female Black Grouse Lyrurus tetrix ArchiMer
Soulsbury, Carl D.; Lebigre, Christophe.
There is widespread interest in the relationship between individual genetic diversity and fitness-related traits (heterozygosity-fitness correlations; HFCs). Most studies have found weak continuous increases of fitness with increasing heterozygosity, while negative HFCs have rarely been reported. Negative HFCs are expected in cases of outbreeding depression, but outbreeding is rare in natural populations. Negative HFCs may also arise through viability selection acting on low heterozygosity individuals at an early stage producing a skew in the heterozygosity distribution. We tested this idea using survival and clutch parameters (egg mass, egg volume, chick mass, clutch size) in female Black Grouse Lyrurus tetrix and carried out simulations to determine how...
